Comparing previous studies with a group of students, we translated a subtractive digital models into a 3D physical form. In an aim to explore the contrasting processes of stereotomic and tectonic form, we chose to make our model with one half in concrete and the other in velum paper and wooden dowels. I learned how to cast concrete and adapt to its brittle nature in thinner areas of our design.

For our film, I proposed the concept of the four natural elements (fire, water, land, and air) to reflect the artist Isamu Noguchi's earth-bound sculpture. These varying elements also aimed to amplify the contrasting behaviors of the stereotomic and tectonic model halves.

In this project, I studied Noguchi's untitled sculpture, intrigued by its many interlocking parts, and recreated it with wire. Through a series of diagrams and studies, I used the wire to demonstrate the fragility, tension, and balance between the many individual pieces that together created a united whole.

To improve my understanding of balancing solid void relationships, I carved many cubes in a subtractive process with shapes extruded from Noguchi's sculptures.
