ROME TRAVEL COURSE
Project Type:
Hand Drawing, Photography, Poetry, Short Film, Rhino Drafting, & Book Design
Date:
May, 2025
This course exposed me to Rome through an immersion into the daily lifestyle of its citizens. I resided outside the city center for a month, beyond tourism to the small family businesses, parks filled with locals, and people vending at markets to make a living to afford the growing city expenses.
I also visited architectural firms in the city and learned about their approach to reviving design that serves the community as well as sustainable steps that are common practice when constructing and deconstructing structures.

I recorded short film clips and wrote a corresponding poem to capture my experience in Rome focusing on the city's graffiti. Graffiti is an art form aligned with the conversations we had in the course about consumerism and the loss of community in Rome. I imagine it as a symbol of citizens' resilience and reclamation of their city.

For the course's final assignment, I created a temporary exhibition with a group of students. Intrigued by Rome's aqueducts, we strove to monumentalize how they not only served as a waterway but also a shelter and neighborhood for the lower class. Rome was once a home for all, but the government ransacked these homes and privatized land throughout the city. This exhibition calls attention to the remaining artifacts of their habitation and the quality of community that Rome has lost.
